Switching from Windows to Mac: Ctrl key becomes Command key

Moving from Windows to Mac in 2026: What Actually Changes (and What Doesn’t)

Switching guide · Windows to Mac · October 2026

You already know how to use a computer. You just need a new map.

Most people who move from Windows to a MacBook settle in within a week. The things that trip them up are small and predictable: a different key for shortcuts, a different name for File Explorer, and a pen drive that suddenly won’t save. Here’s the map, before you buy.

The short answer

  • Shortcuts move one key: most Windows Ctrl shortcuts become ⌘ Command on a Mac. Copy is ⌘C, paste is ⌘V.
  • Office, Chrome, Zoom, WhatsApp, Canva, Photoshop all run on Mac. Check any software your office, college or bank gives you before switching.
  • Big PC games are the main thing you give up. Many popular titles are Windows-only.
  • Still need one Windows app? Apple-chip Macs can run Windows 11 inside an app called Parallels Desktop, a setup Microsoft has authorised.
  • Your pen drives and hard disks may open as read-only. Reformat them as exFAT to use them on both.

The first week: what’s where

Nearly everything you do on Windows has a direct match on a Mac. It’s just named or placed differently. Keep this table open for the first few days.

On Windows On a Mac How to get there
Ctrl + C / V / X / Z Command + C / V / X / Z ⌘C ⌘V ⌘X ⌘Z
File Explorer Finder The blue smiling face, first icon in the Dock
Control Panel / Settings System Settings Apple logo at the top-left › System Settings
Recycle Bin Trash Right end of the Dock
Taskbar and Start menu Dock and Launchpad / Spotlight Press ⌘ Space and type an app’s name to open it
Right-click Two-finger click Click the trackpad with two fingers
Close the program (Alt + F4) Quit the app ⌘Q. Closing the window (⌘W) often leaves the app running
Task Manager (Ctrl + Alt + Del) Force Quit / Activity Monitor ⌥ Option + ⌘ + Esc
Print Screen Screenshot ⇧ Shift + ⌘ + 3 (whole screen) or ⇧⌘4 (pick an area)
Delete key (delete forward) Fn + Delete The Mac’s Delete key works like Backspace
Based on Apple’s own “Mac tips for Windows switchers” page. Everything above works the same on every MacBook, Intel or Apple chip.
The habit that takes longest to change

On Windows, clicking the red X closes the program. On a Mac, the red dot usually just closes that window and the app keeps running in the background (you’ll see a small dot under its icon in the Dock). Use ⌘Q when you’re done with an app.

Before you switch: five things to check

Most switchers are happy. The ones who aren’t usually hit one of these. Ten minutes of checking now saves a wrong purchase.

  1. The software you must use. List every app you need for work or study. Most big names have Mac versions (Microsoft 365, Google apps, Zoom, Teams, Adobe). Some office, accounting, engineering and government tools are Windows-only, TallyPrime among them (see our business and CA guide). Search “[app name] for Mac” or ask the vendor.
  2. Games. Casual and many indie games run on Mac, but a lot of big PC titles, especially online shooters with anti-cheat, don’t. If gaming is a priority, keep a Windows PC or console for it.
  3. Pen drives and external disks. Windows drives are usually formatted NTFS, which a Mac can open but not write to. For a drive you share between Mac and Windows, back it up and reformat it as exFAT. Both systems read and write exFAT.
  4. Your phone. An iPhone works best with a Mac (AirDrop, Messages, calls). Android works too, but there’s no official Quick Share on Mac, so move photos with Google Photos, Google Drive or a USB file-transfer app.
  5. Your printer and dongles. Most printers work over Wi-Fi without drivers. Newer MacBooks have USB-C ports, so keep a small USB-C to USB-A adapter for older pen drives and mice.

“But I still need one Windows program”

That’s common, and there are honest options. Which one works depends on your Mac.

Apple-chip Mac (M1 and later)
  • Run Windows 11 inside Parallels Desktop, side by side with your Mac apps. Microsoft lists it as an authorised way to run Windows 11 on M-series Macs.
  • You need a Parallels subscription and a Windows 11 Pro licence.
  • Most office and business apps work. Some games, hardware drivers and anti-cheat software don’t.
  • Get 16GB memory if you’ll run Windows regularly, because both systems share it.
Intel Mac (2019–2020 and older)
  • Can install Windows 10 directly using Apple’s Boot Camp. You choose Mac or Windows when you start up.
  • Runs Windows at full speed, so it suits heavier Windows-only software.
  • Intel MacBooks are best kept on macOS Sequoia. See our Intel MacBook guide.

Moving your files across

  1. Use Apple’s Windows Migration Assistant. Install it on your old PC, put both computers on the same Wi-Fi, and open Migration Assistant on the Mac. It copies documents, photos, bookmarks and email accounts.
  2. Or copy by hand. Put your files on an exFAT drive or in Google Drive, OneDrive or iCloud Drive and copy them onto the Mac.
  3. Sign in again. Chrome, Microsoft 365 and WhatsApp bring back your bookmarks, documents and chats once you sign in.

Why switchers often start with a pre-owned Mac

A switch is a bit of a leap, so many people prefer not to spend ₹1.5 lakh on day one. A well-checked pre-owned MacBook keeps the cost low while you find out if the Mac suits you, and Macs are built from a solid aluminium body, so a good one feels new in your hands. Apple-chip MacBooks from 2020 onwards still run the newest macOS.

  • Everyday use, longest battery: a MacBook Air. No fan, so it’s silent.
  • Will run Windows in Parallels: pick 16GB memory.
  • Want a bigger screen: a 15-inch Air or a MacBook Pro.

Questions switchers ask us

Is a Mac hard to learn after Windows?

Not really. Browsing, Office, email and video calls work the same way. The changes are shortcuts, where things live and how apps quit. Most people stop thinking about it within a week.

Can I use Microsoft Word and Excel on a Mac?

Yes. Microsoft 365 has full Mac versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, and they run natively on Apple-chip Macs. Very heavy Excel users who rely on Windows-only add-ins or macros should test those first.

Why can’t I copy files to my pen drive?

It’s probably formatted NTFS, which macOS can read but not write. Copy the files off, then use Disk Utility on the Mac to erase it as exFAT. It will then work on both Mac and Windows.

Does a Mac need antivirus?

macOS has built-in malware protection and Apple keeps it updated. Keep macOS updated, install apps from the App Store or the maker’s own website, and be careful with pirated software, which is the most common way Macs get infected.

Will my Android phone work with a Mac?

Yes, for everyday use: WhatsApp, Google Photos and Google Drive all work in the browser or as apps. What you miss are iPhone-only extras like AirDrop and texting from the Mac.

Should I buy an Intel or an Apple-chip Mac?

For most switchers, an Apple-chip Mac: better battery life, cooler and quieter, and it runs the newest macOS. Choose an Intel MacBook only if you need Windows at full speed through Boot Camp, or the lowest possible price.

Not sure your apps will work on a Mac?

Send Aparna the list of software you use for work or study. We’ll tell you honestly if a Mac suits you, which model fits, and send real photos and battery health of the unit before you pay.
