MacBook Pro 16 A2141 battery replacement

MacBook Pro 16-inch 2019 (A2141) Battery Replacement: Names, Battery Model and What the Job Really Involves

MacBook repair · Batteries · October 2026

The 16-inch MacBook Pro 2019 battery is a technician’s job. Here is why, in plain words.

On this Mac, the battery sits under almost everything. The full procedure runs to more than 75 steps and includes taking out the logic board. We still give you the model names, the battery that fits and a clear overview, so you can choose between doing it and handing it over.

The short answer

  • Your Mac is an A2141, called MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) by Apple. The battery model is A2113.
  • Difficulty: expert. The battery is glued in, the trackpad, hinge covers and many cables come off, and the logic board comes out.
  • Most owners should have a technician fit it. We can supply the right battery either way.
  • Never DIY a swollen battery. A damaged lithium battery can start a fire.

Should you do this yourself?

You are... Better choice Why
Comfortable with tiny screws and patient Only if you have repaired laptops before Expert job: the logic board comes out and the battery is glued in.
Never opened a laptop, or unsure about tiny cables Have a technician fit it The chain of cables and the logic board are too much for a first repair.
Seeing a swollen battery or a lifted trackpad Stop and get help Do not open it yourself. See the warning on this page.
Battery is fine but the Mac still misbehaves Fix the cause first Check the charger, cable and the SMC or restart steps before buying a battery.

How we put this page together

The steps and screw sizes come from our own battery listing and published repair procedures for this model. Cycle limits and the 80% figure come from Apple. Owner experience comes from public forum threads linked below, which we paraphrase rather than copy. Prices are from our own listings.

What we have not done yet: photographed this repair in our own workshop. The drawings on this page are our illustrations, not photos. We are adding real photos and will update the page. We found no first-hand A2141 battery thread, so the owner cases below are from the nearest glued-battery MacBook Pros and are labelled as such.

Is it really the battery?

Check before you buy. In System Settings, open Battery, then Battery Health. Hold Option, click the Apple menu and open System Information, Power, to see the cycle count. Apple lists a maximum of 1,000 cycles for the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019), and designs the battery to keep up to 80% of its original capacity at that point. Apple explains the count on its cycle count page and the “Service Recommended” status on its battery service page. Apple says you can keep using the Mac with that status, and that AppleCare+ replaces a battery below 80% at no extra cost.

  • Signs it is the battery: Service Recommended, a cycle count near 1,000, battery life that has dropped sharply, or shutdowns while unplugged.
  • Signs it is not: the Mac fails only with one cable or charger. Try another first.

Which battery to buy

You need the A2113 battery. Our listing shows three grades: Standard from ₹5,490, Premium from ₹7,950 and a Service Pack grade from ₹9,390, with a 9-month replacement warranty. Our Standard vs Premium guide explains the grades. If a replacement battery is not recognised afterwards, check the battery board cable first.

Replace the Mac Our pre-owned 16-inch M1 Pro starts at ₹90,490 Your A2141 is Intel and cannot run macOS 27.

A new battery costs about 6% to 10% of the price of a pre-owned 16-inch M1 Pro. Because the job is so big, most owners should pay for fitting rather than risk the logic board.

Why this job is so big

To reach the battery cells on this Mac, the usual procedure has you remove, in order, the following. This is the chain that makes it expert work.

The job in eight parts

This is an overview of the 75-plus steps, not a replacement for them. If you go ahead, work from a full photo guide beside you.

1

Prepare

Back up the Mac and let the battery run down. Disable Auto Boot first, so the Mac cannot switch itself on when you open it. In Terminal, run the first command below, and run the second one when the repair is finished. It may not work on every Mac.

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00
sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

2

Open the case and unplug the battery

Remove six P5 screws (four 3.7 mm and two 7.3 mm), which come out at a slight angle and must go back the same way. Release the lower case with a suction handle and opening picks, then slide it toward the front. Peel the sticker over the battery board, disconnect the battery board data cable at both ends, remove the 6.7 mm T5 screw on the battery power connector, and lift the connector clear.

3

Remove the trackpad

Disconnect the trackpad cable, warm it with a hair dryer or iOpener and peel it off the battery. Remove the 13 T5 screws (nine 5.8 mm and four 4.9 mm), which look alike, and lift the trackpad away. Nine tiny washers sit under it and are easy to lose.

4

Disconnect the display and hinge side

Remove the display board flex cover and bracket and disconnect the flex cable. Remove the four hinge cover screws and both hinge covers.

5

Disconnect everything on the logic board

Unplug the Touch ID, headphone jack, Touch Bar, lid angle sensor, both Thunderbolt cables, keyboard, both speakers, both fans, both keyboard backlight cables and the microphone array, plus the three antenna cables. Many are fragile flat connectors with a small locking flap that you lift gently.

6

Remove the logic board

Remove eleven screws of different sizes and types, peel up the fan damping strips, and lift the board out from the left side. Make sure no cable is trapped underneath, and feed the antenna cables through the gap when it goes back in.

7

Dissolve the battery adhesive

Put aluminium foil between the display and keyboard, seal the trackpad area with painter’s tape, and wear eye protection and gloves. Apply a few drops of adhesive remover under the battery cells, wait about two minutes, and slide plastic cards under the cells: two on the right, two on the left, then the two in the centre, until all six are free. The remover is flammable and can damage plastics, including the keys.

8

Fit the new battery and rebuild

Clean off the old adhesive, fit the new battery, and rebuild everything in reverse. Take extra care with the small connectors that catch under the logic board.

After the new battery goes in

Reset the SMC before you calibrate. This Mac has the T2 chip, and Apple’s steps for it are: shut down, then hold the left Control, left Option and right Shift keys for 7 seconds. Keep holding them and also press and hold the power button, for another 7 seconds. Release everything, wait a few seconds, and press the power button to turn on. Then calibrate: charge to 100%, keep charging for at least 2 hours, use it until the low battery warning, let it sleep, wait at least 5 hours, then charge to 100% without interruption.

Mistakes people make

  1. Skipping the Auto Boot step and opening the Mac while it can switch itself on.
  2. Forgetting where each cable went. Photograph every connector before you lift it.
  3. Mixing the look-alike trackpad screws. Keep the 5.8 mm and 4.9 mm ones apart.
  4. Losing the tiny washers under the trackpad.
  5. Trapping a cable under the logic board when it goes back.
  6. Putting remover on the keys or plastics. It can damage them.
  7. Trusting a cheap battery. Quality varies.

What owners say

These are paraphrased from public threads about the nearest glued-battery MacBook Pros. Read them for the exact words.

Case 1 · A DIY saving, and a shortcut (MacRumors, December 2024)

An owner of a 2015 MacBook Pro said Apple quoted £250 to £600 for a battery swap and they did it themselves for £58. They found one published guide had 46 steps and judged that many tape-removal steps were unnecessary. They said it was too early to judge the new battery’s life.

What to take from it: one owner’s shortcut is not a recommendation. Follow the full steps for your year. Read the thread.

Case 2 · The torn trackpad cable (MacRumors, October 2020)

An owner of a 2015 13-inch MacBook Pro pulled out a cable while replacing the battery, and the keyboard and trackpad stopped working. Replies said it was the trackpad cable, that it is easy to damage and not an expensive part, and that the owner should try reconnecting it very carefully, flipping up its tiny lock. One reply said soldering a ribbon cable had never worked for them.

What to take from it: go slowly near the trackpad cable. Read the thread.

So should you do it yourself?

  • Probably not, unless you have repaired laptops before, own the screwdriver types the guide lists, and have a quiet day and a clear table.
  • A technician can do it, and we can supply the A2113 battery that fits.
  • Never start if the battery is swollen or the case is lifting.

What to do with the old battery

Do not put it in the household bin. In India, laptop batteries fall under the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, which make producers responsible for collecting and recycling them. Ask the seller of your new battery whether they take the old one back, or hand it to an authorised collection point. See the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board battery waste page. If it was swollen, keep it away from heat and from anything that could puncture it until you hand it in.

Questions we get asked

Why does the logic board have to come out?

In the usual procedure it is removed before the battery steps. The steps do not spell out why, so all we can say is that it is part of the usual procedure for this model.

What tools does the job need?

The job needs P5 pentalobe, T3 and T5 Torx, a TR8 security Torx and a P2 pentalobe, plus a suction handle, opening picks, a spudger, tweezers, an iOpener, plastic cards, adhesive remover, gloves and safety glasses.

My new battery is not recognised. What now?

Check the battery board cable first, which may be disconnected or damaged. Recheck its connections at both ends.

Which grade should I choose?

Standard for a lower cost, Premium or Service Pack if you plan to keep the Mac for years. Our Standard vs Premium guide explains the difference.

How many charge cycles does the battery last?

Apple lists a maximum of 1,000 cycles for the MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019). It designs the battery to keep up to 80% of its original capacity at that point.

Will Apple replace it for free?

Apple says a battery replacement is at no additional cost with AppleCare+ when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity. Otherwise there is a fee, set by Apple after inspection. Check Apple’s estimator for your exact model.

Can I keep using the Mac if it says Service Recommended?

Apple says yes. The status means the battery holds less charge than when new. Service it when the shorter battery life affects you.

Can the A2141 run macOS 27?

No. It has an Intel chip, and Apple’s macOS 27 list does not include it. A new battery fixes battery life, not software support. Our macOS 27 guide has the list.

Want the right battery, and a clear answer on fitting?

Send Aparna your Mac’s model number from the bottom case and a screenshot of Battery Health. We will confirm that the A2113 fits, and tell you honestly how fitting works for you.

This is an overview of a procedure with more than 75 steps. Our drawings are simplified, not photos, and we have not done this repair ourselves for this guide. A punctured lithium battery can be dangerous. Checked 30 October 2026.
