iPhone Slow or Draining Fast After iOS 27? A Fix Guide for iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15
Your iPhone didn’t get old overnight. Here’s what changed.
iOS 27 arrived in September, and many owners of the iPhone 12, 13, 14 and 15 say their phone feels slower or the battery drops faster. Some of that fixes itself within days. Some of it is a setting. And sometimes the update simply exposes a battery that was already tired. Here’s how to tell which one you have.
The short answer
- First 2 to 7 days after updating: heavier battery use and warmth are normal while the iPhone re-indexes photos, search and apps. Charge overnight on Wi-Fi and wait.
- Still slow after a week? Tone down the glass effects and background activity with the settings below.
- Check Battery Health. Below 80%, or an “Important Battery Message”, means the battery itself is the problem, and no setting will fully fix that.
- iPhone 12 to 14 batteries are designed to keep 80% after about 500 full cycles. Most 2020–2022 iPhones are well past that today.
Is iOS 27 making older iPhones slow on purpose?
No. iOS 27 supports every iPhone from the iPhone 11 onwards, and Apple says this release focused on speed: a reworked CPU scheduler, smoother animations and faster search. Apple quotes apps opening up to 30% faster. Those are Apple’s own figures, so treat them as a best case, but nothing in iOS 27 is designed to slow an iPhone 12 to 15 down.
What does happen is this:
- The update keeps working after it installs. For a few days the phone rebuilds its photo library index, search database and app data in the background. That uses power and makes it warm. Light users usually settle in 1 to 2 days; big photo libraries can take up to a week.
- The new look costs graphics power. iOS 26 introduced “Liquid Glass”, the see-through, blurred style for menus and buttons, and iOS 27 keeps it. On an older chip it adds a little work to every screen.
- An old battery can’t keep up. When a worn battery can’t deliver peak power, the iPhone manages performance to avoid sudden shutdowns. That feels like lag, especially when opening the camera, games or big apps.
8 settings that help on an iPhone 12 to 15
Try these in order. None of them removes features you’ll miss, and you can switch any of them back.
- Let it finish indexing. Plug in overnight on Wi-Fi for two or three nights after the update. This alone fixes most “new update drain”.
- Make the glass less see-through. Settings › Appearance › Liquid Glass and slide towards tinted. For the biggest effect, turn on Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Reduce Transparency.
- Cut the animations. Settings › Accessibility › Motion › Reduce Motion. Apps open with a quick fade instead of a zoom.
- Stop apps refreshing in the background. Settings › General › Background App Refresh. Turn it off for apps you don’t need updated all the time.
- Find the battery hog. Settings › Battery shows which apps used the most power. Update or delete the worst one. Sharp drops on the graph point to one app; a steady slope is indexing.
- Update your apps. Older app versions sometimes misbehave on a new iOS. Update everything in the App Store.
- Free up storage. Keep at least 10% of storage free. Settings › General › iPhone Storage shows what to clear.
- Restart once. A restart clears stuck background tasks. If the phone is still hot and slow after a week, a force restart is worth trying.
When it’s the battery, not iOS
Open Settings › Battery › Battery Health. On iPhone 15 and later you’ll also see the cycle count there. Then read it like this:
Apple designs iPhone 14 and earlier batteries to keep 80% of their capacity after 500 full charge cycles, and iPhone 15 and later after 1,000. If you charge once a day, an iPhone 12 or 13 reached 500 cycles long ago. That’s normal wear, not a fault.
| iPhone | Launched | Designed to keep 80% for | Typical state today |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max | 2020 | 500 cycles | Most original batteries are worn |
| iPhone 13 series | 2021 | 500 cycles | Many are near or below 80% |
| iPhone 14 series | 2022 | 500 cycles | Heavy users are reaching 80% |
| iPhone 15 series | 2023 | 1,000 cycles | Usually still healthy |
What the screen tells you before and after
Three things you might see in Battery Health, and what each one means.
Below 80% with a service message. Time for a new battery.
What many cheap replacement batteries show: a warning that stays in Settings.
New cells start at 100% and 0 cycles, with no warning message.
If your Battery Health is low or you’re charging twice a day, a fresh battery brings back the all-day phone you bought. Our Premium (Service Pack) iPhone batteries for the iPhone 12 to 15 Pro Max are made for exactly this:
- Brand-new cells, so the iPhone shows 100% health and 0 cycles, because that’s genuinely what it is.
- Battery Health keeps working in Settings, with no warning message after fitting.
- No extra flex strip or programmer needed. It fits like the original.
- Battery life like the day you bought the phone.
Questions we get asked
Should I go back to iOS 26?
Usually you can’t. Apple stops allowing older versions to be installed shortly after a new release. The settings above and a healthy battery are the practical fix.
Does Low Power Mode help?
Yes, especially in the first two days after updating. It reduces background activity and screen effects. Turn it on in Settings › Battery.
Will a new battery make my iPhone faster?
If the old battery was worn, yes. The iPhone no longer has to manage performance around a battery that can’t deliver peak power, so apps and the camera respond quickly again.
My battery shows 100% and 0 cycles after replacement. Is that suspicious?
Not on a brand-new cell: that’s what a new battery should show. The warning sign is a phone sold as used with very low cycles but health in the low 80s. Those numbers don’t add up and may mean the battery’s records were reset.
