Making animated videos for free

Make Animated Videos for Free, With No Credits and No Limits (HTML to MP4)

AI guide · Animated video · October 2026

The one truly unlimited way to make animated videos for free: write them as a web page.

Hosted AI video tools charge credits for every clip. There is another way. Describe the video, let an AI agent write it as HTML, and render it to MP4 on your own computer. Nothing is metered, because nothing leaves your machine. Here is how it works and where it stops.

The short answer

  • The tool: HyperFrames, an open-source framework (Apache-2.0 licence) that turns HTML, CSS, media and animations into MP4 videos.
  • Why it’s unlimited: rendering happens on your computer, so there are no credits. You still need an AI agent such as Claude Code to write the video for you.
  • You need: Node.js 22 or newer, FFmpeg and an AI coding agent. The README also describes a manual command-line route.
  • Good for: titles, captions, explainers, charts, product intros and social animations.
  • Not for: realistic footage of people or places. That is what AI video generators are for.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for one use case: you want finished, repeatable videos made of text, graphics and clips you provide, and you don’t want to pay per video. It is not about generating footage with AI, which is a different job with different limits. To generate clips on your own Mac’s GPU, read our offline AI video guide.

How it works

A normal video editor puts clips on a timeline. HyperFrames works the other way round. A video is a web page: text, shapes, images and clips, with animations that run on a timeline. A browser draws each frame, and the tool turns those frames into an MP4. Because the same page always renders the same video, you can fix one detail and re-render without starting over.

You don’t need to write the page yourself. AI coding agents such as Claude Code can do it. HyperFrames ships skills that teach the agent the loop: plan the video, write the HTML, add the animation and media, check it, preview it and render. Its README lists a core set of four skills, and a catalogue of about 450 ready-made blocks such as transitions, titles, captions and charts that the agent can reuse.

The workflow

  1. Set up the tools once. You need an AI agent such as Claude Code, plus Node.js 22 or newer and FFmpeg on your computer. Our reels guide walks through the setup and lets Claude install everything for you.
  2. Install the HyperFrames skills.Inside your video project folder, ask your agent to run this command, or run it yourself in Terminal:
npx hyperframes skills update
  1. Describe the video. The README suggests a prompt like the one below. Be specific about length, text, style and music.
Using /hyperframes, create a 10-second product intro with a fade-in title, a background video, and subtle background music.
  1. Preview and ask for changes in plain words: “make the title bigger”, “slow the fade”, “use our brand colours”.
  2. Render to MP4 when you’re happy, and watch the result on your phone before you post.

Prefer to drive it yourself?

The README also lists a manual route with three commands, which create a project, open a live-reload preview in your browser and render the MP4:

npx hyperframes init my-video
cd my-video
npx hyperframes preview
npx hyperframes render

What to make with it

The README lists product launch videos and feature announcements, data visualisations and chart races, and map-based videos among its examples. For a shop or a small business, three ideas to try:

  1. A tips reel.“Make a 15-second vertical video with three tips to make a MacBook battery last longer. Big captions, black background, yellow highlights.”
  2. A price or number explainer.“Animate a bar chart comparing three prices, with each bar growing in turn and the numbers counting up.”
  3. A brand intro.“A 5-second intro with our logo, a one-line tagline and a soft sound.” Use only a logo and sound you own or are licensed to use.

Limits to know

  1. It isn’t a camera.It won’t invent a realistic person walking down a street.
  2. You still need an AI agent. The framework is free, but the agent that writes the page may need a paid plan, such as Claude Pro for Claude Code.
  3. Rights still apply.Use music, fonts, images and video clips you are licensed to use.
  4. Check every render.Watch the full video for spelling, timing and anything cut off.

Questions we get asked

Is HyperFrames really free?

Yes. It is open source under the Apache-2.0 licence. Rendering costs nothing. The AI agent you use with it may have its own cost.

Do I need to know HTML?

No. Your AI agent writes it. You describe what you want and ask for changes in plain words.

Is this the same as an AI video generator?

No. A generator invents footage from a prompt. HyperFrames builds a video from text, graphics and media you provide, so it is predictable and repeatable.

Does it work on Windows?

The README lists Node.js 22 or newer and FFmpeg as the requirements, and both are available on Windows. Our reels guide covers setup on both Mac and Windows.
