Repair, Replace or Buy Pre-Owned? How to Decide for a Failing MacBook (India)
Fix the part, or buy the Mac? Do one sum.
A failing MacBook leaves three options: repair it, replace it, or buy another. Here is the order we would decide in, with real part prices from our store so you can do the sum for your own model.
The short answer
- Battery or keyboard: usually worth repairing. Each is about 12% or less of the price of a pre-owned Air M1 in our store.
- Screen or logic board: compare with a replacement. On the A2337 they are about 46% and 63% of a pre-owned unit, parts only.
- Test first: Apple Diagnostics and the cycle count before you buy any part.
- Ask for the total in writing, parts and labour, before you decide.
Part prices and stock for the A2337 were read from our own store listings on 31 Oct 2026 and are parts only. Apple statements come from Apple Support pages we opened that day. The Keyboard Service Program ending is as reported by MacRumors on 19 Nov 2024. Labour is not included in any figure here. We have no customer cases on this page and no tests of our own.
How do you decide between repair, replace and buying another Mac?
Start with the fault, then compare one number: the cost to repair against the cost of a certified pre-owned Mac that does what you need. This page gives you the method and live part prices from our store, so you can do the sum for your own model.
| Fault | Key fact | What it means for the decision | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery drains fast or says Service Recommended | Apple says you can keep using the Mac when it shows Service Recommended. Most recent notebooks are designed for 1,000 cycles to 80% capacity. | Usually the cheapest fix. Check the cycle count first. | Standard vs Premium battery |
| Keys stick or repeat on a 2016 to 2019 Pro or 2018 to 2019 Air | Apple’s Keyboard Service Program has ended (MacRumors reported it on 19 Nov 2024). | A paid repair now. Choose the grade. | Standard vs Premium keyboard |
| Screen goes dark at a wide lid angle on an older Pro | A known cable-wear fault, covered in our guide | A repair that lasts fixes the cable, not just the screen | Flexgate guide |
| Slow or freezing, but parts look fine | Apple Diagnostics helps find which hardware component might be at fault and gives a reference code | Test first. A software or storage problem is not a part problem. | Inspection checklist uses the same test |
| Liquid damage, no power, or a failed board | We did not verify Apple India’s repair prices | Often the point to compare against a replacement Mac | Use the sum below |
What does the sum look like for a real Mac?
Take a MacBook Air M1 (A2337). These are parts-only prices from our store on 31 Oct 2026. They do not include labour, so ask us for the total before you decide.
| Item (A2337, our store, 31 Oct 2026) | Price | As a share of a pre-owned Air M1 at ₹49,720 |
|---|---|---|
| Battery, Standard | ₹4,950 | 10% |
| Battery, Premium | ₹6,190 | 12% |
| Keyboard (listing price from) | ₹4,490 | 9% |
| Screen assembly | ₹22,990 | 46% |
| Logic board with Touch ID | ₹31,250 | 63% |
| Certified pre-owned Air M1, 8GB and 256GB (1 in stock when we checked) | ₹49,720 | 100% |
The pattern is the one most people miss. A battery or a keyboard is a small share of a whole Mac, so repair is the sensible move. A screen or a logic board approaches half or more of the price of a replacement, so compare carefully. The pre-owned price is for one unit in stock and will change, so check the listing before you decide.
Five questions that settle it
- Is the fault the part you think it is? Run Apple Diagnostics first, and read the cycle count in System Information, Power.
- What is the total, parts and labour? Get one number in writing.
- How long do you want the Mac to last? A new battery on an old Mac still has an old logic board and storage.
- Does the Mac still get macOS updates? An Intel Mac that cannot take the newest macOS limits how long it stays useful. See the Intel Tahoe guide.
- Would the same money buy a better Mac? If the repair total approaches a certified pre-owned unit that is faster, buy the unit.
Mistakes people make
- Repairing a Mac that has several problems. A new battery will not fix a failing screen. Check the whole Mac before you fix one part.
- Buying the cheapest part for a long-term Mac. The grade matters. Our keyboard and battery guides explain Standard and Premium.
- Ignoring the model. Check the A-number first, using the model guide.
- Selling the old Mac without erasing it. Read the Activation Lock guide first.
Questions we get asked
Is it worth replacing the battery on an old MacBook?
Often yes, because the battery is a small share of the Mac. Check the cycle count and Condition first, and see the battery guides for the grade.
Is it worth replacing a MacBook screen?
Compare the screen price with a pre-owned unit of the same model. For the A2337 Air M1 our screen assembly is about 46% of the price of a certified pre-owned unit in stock, before labour.
Should I use Apple’s repair or an independent one?
We do not have Apple India’s repair prices on this page and did not verify them, so we cannot compare. Ask each for a written total and compare it with the sum above.
Can a pre-owned Mac be locked or have repairs I cannot see?
Yes. Apple warns a part taken from another product could be locked to someone else’s Apple Account. See the Activation Lock guide.
Not sure whether to repair or replace?
Send Aparna the model (a screenshot of About This Mac), the fault and what you use the Mac for. We will give you the repair total and a comparable pre-owned unit, and tell you honestly which makes sense.
